I am new to AR's, but not to guns in general. I have been wanting a better HD gun to assist my shotgun and pistol since my daughter was born and the way my house is laid out. I thought it was going to be an easy decision for me to just go to a big box store and buy a $800 rifle, but it has been anything but that since reading the Windam story. I know i want a reliable 16in with a removable handle in the $800 range. I do not want to build and i would like to buy locally (type A). All the guns in stock in my price range are optics ready so i will have to purchase sight and handle separately. Thanks for the help i am driving my self crazy.

Windam Pros
Seems that a new company would like to build a quality product to get a good name in the business.
Lifetime waranty

Windam Cons
New name in the the business
Might not be around to fulfill the lifetime warranty
Carry handle is $110 (want colors to match)

Bushmaster Pros
Been around for ages
My most heard about AR

Bushmaster Cons
Hear that reliability and quality has fallen
Since moving to new facility, might not have as many trainned technicians.

Windam Pros
Seems that a new company would like to build a quality product to get a good name in the business. This company is comprised almost entirely of Former Bushmaster employees after they were let go. Thank "The Freedom Group" for that.
Lifetime waranty

Windam Cons
New name in the the business
Might not be around to fulfill the lifetime warranty They will be around for awhile, what do you consider "lifetime". Also a warranty on an AR-15 is good, but given modularity, AR-15s are infinitely repairable locally.
Carry handle is $110 (want colors to match) If that is important to you, you have to pay the price.

Bushmaster Pros Impossible, there are no pros anymore with Bushy
Been around for ages. Technically the only part of the new Bushmaster that has been around for ages is the name, the new Bushmaster is garbage.
My most heard about AR

Bushmaster Cons Nothing but Cons.
Hear that reliability and quality has fallen This is an understatement
Since moving to new facility, might not have as many trainned technicians.

If you can get a Bushy in your price range get it. I own one, very reliable. Keep it clean, and you shouldn't need a tech. You will learn to work on it yourself(that's part of the BRD).

I got to handle one of the Windham Weaponry AR's in the store the other day. Seemed well put together, everything fit nice and tight with no excessive play between the upper and lower. Trigger was as good as any mil-spec mass produced trigger can be, safety had a nice positive click when going from safe to fire or vice versa, nice lockup on the adjustable stock without any excessive wiggle. I can't remember if the gas key was properly staked or not, I don't think I pulled the BCG out.

Thanks that what I was looking to hear. Ar's are in a whole differnet category compared to my hunting rifles and shotguns and just not really sure what to look for.

Leaning towards Windham. Just wish I could find the MPC model with the carry handle included locally!

Does anyone know if the only difference between the SRC and MPC model is the carry handle and front sight.

Why are you limiting yourself to just Bushy or Windham?

There are plenty of good rifles in your range.

PSA is a great option: $699.00

I added the Surefire XM951 and MOE Mount Kit, Sling Mount, and a $20.00 Surplus Carry Handle

Price of the build.
Lower:
$79.00 + $20.00 FFL Transfer + $7.00 shipping
Upper:$629.00 + $7.00 shipping
Trigger: $54.99 free shipping
MOE SLing Loop: $9.00 + $6.00 shipping
Carry Handle: $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping
$832.99 out the door
(I already had the Flashlight)

When did you buy this? Is it a pre-Freedom Group rifle?

I have a friend who got a bushy right after the ban was lifted. It was a great rifle until it fired out of battery. The lower survived and he only ended up needing a new upper, and it might not have been the rifles fault but... I'd pass on those. Their reputation hasn't exactly improved since then.

I've seen problems with almost every brand you can think of. If you want an "off the rack" range toy Bushmasters are no better or worse than any other plinker out there. If you want to use the gun for a living then build your own or have one built for you using quality parts.
