A separate discussion is developing in my M16 A2 clone build about having some custom lowers done with the correct markings without any logos to prevent any copyright infringements.

This is going to have to be the route we pursue.  I am sure Black Creek will not invite a lawsuit for any Colt markings.  James and I agree the lower needs to be a basic plain Jane with just lettering only, no logos.  The 9mm lower I looked at was tastefully marked with their company name.  It did have their logo but these will be custom so we will dictate what is there.  Black Creeks company name has to be there but can be small as is their typical marking.  Its small lettering that looks like

                                                   BLACK CREEK PRECISION

                                                           JACKSONVILLE FL

                                                                       USA

This to be located on the right on the left side of the lower along with the SAFE/SEMI/BURST.  This will also be marked on the right side as well.

On the left of the lower all that will be imprinted will be with no logo

                                                                    M16 A2

                                                                              CAL 5.56MM

                                                                         XXXSERIALNOXXXX

I will also see about some with M16 A1 and the appropriate SAFE/SEMI/AUTO for those that are interested.

All that being said, any one interested in at some time building an M16A2 or A1 rifle, please post up here.  I need to have a basic idea of how many can be produced so we can get a firm price on what these may cost.  I am hoping it will be less than $150 but really I dont have any idea at this time.  Black Creek is getting ready for the SHOT show in a week or so and I want to have a good idea of how many and have a basic line drawing of what we want done so I can get some pricing..

I'm in for at least one, maybe two depending on pricing.

BTW, thank you for taking the time to set this up. :thumb:

To give a basic idea on what an M16 A2 lower looks like, here is a Colt lower.  We are trying to copy the correct font and size of it in the appropriate locations.  Does anyone have any idea what font is used for the lettering on this lower?   It kind of looks like Sans Sarif.  We also need to find someone that has an actual Colt lower that will measure the size of the font so that can be duplicated as well.

 Any new input will help.

No problem.  The history of the rifle interests me as well as the multi purpose platform possibilities.   No telling how many of these Black rifles I am going to end up with.  I certainly wont put as much time and effort in as Tackleberry.  We should all aspire to understand the platform as well as he does and have as many rifles in our cabinets as he does.

If you are interested, i can get the info on who did these. He goes as far to modify the recievers to be print correct of the specific era you are going for. He only does these on 80% lowers since to eliviate having all the manufacture labeling.

It seems Helvetica Condensed is a very close match. Not sure on the size. For the SAFE/SEMI/BURST markings, regular Helvetica would work. Check it out:

I like those M-16 A1 lowers. I would like to build a clone one day. Depending on the price, I might be interested.

That little collection is sweet!  Any info would be appreciated.  I cant believe the logoing and company specific imprinting done on these.  I wouldnt expect Black Creek to do this.  Are these in the $250 each range like the one in my A2 Build thread?  I see these are sitting on a 4473, did you fill it out for these?

I wonder how accurate these are.  Will you measure the lettering and give us an idea of the size?

Thanks!

I would have to say it looks pretty close.  Is this the image of the Repop lower or a true Colt?  What do you think James?

I doubt very seriously that Black Creek Precision is able to do re-profiling on lowers. Nodak Spud is the only company making the slabside lowers (NDS-601) as well as the partial-fence lower (NDS-XM16E1) and full-fence M16A1 lower (NDS-16A1). They also have 80% lowers for the slabside 601 style (NDS-53), the partial-fence XM16E1 style (NDS-52), and the full-fence M16A1 style (NDS-51).

You can contact them at 952-942-1909 or by e-mail at info@nodakspud.com.

There is a guy named John Braceman that does retro engravings, but only on 80% lowers that have not been milled out. I can get his contact info if anyone is interested. Anodizing can be done by Victor at US Anodizing, but they are running behind lately because of huge vendor orders. You can also use the Brownells Alumahyde coatings in Parkerizing Gray (medium gray) or Dark Parkerizing Gray (dark gray) to get the XM Gray color.

OK guys, here is the drawing of what I will present to Black Creek in a couple of weeks when they get back from the SHOT show.  Kudos to Professor Tackleberry for finding this awesome technical drawing of a true M16 lower receiver.  I assume it is a drawing that the Govt presented to potential manufacturers.  The safety area markings will also appear on the right side of the lower but that will be all.

Sorry I dont know why my images are always so tiny.  They are nice sized on my computer when I look at them and after I send them to photobucket I get a thumbnail.

As Tack has stated the M16A1 castings will be something I doubt BCP will produce so NDS will be the best place to find those.  I dont think they actually do the casting there altho I know they do billet. They might be interested in doing some M16A1 billets but as you can imagine they will probly be much more expensive.  I will ask about it and again if there is enough interest who knows.  It doesnt hurt to ask.

I'm interested in one. I'd also be fine with one in the white, as I'm sure I'll have to finish it to match my "more grey than black" upper.

Here is a bigger view. I doctored the original drawing to reflect the info we would need for the M16A2 lower.
