Sounds like the fight in the North Atlantic between the German Wolf Packs and Allied Convoys. Aircraft range and RADAR were somewhat effective in limiting the wolf pack but the snorkel was a very good counter measure. Underwater drones and increasing the range of weapon systems will make the defender's role harder. Like the writer said, it is an ongoing battle that is one that has been going on for decades and is not likely to change anytime soon.

Exactly. Isn't it always going to be a measure-counter measure war?

It is satisfying to see our Military looking so far into the future,

and also makes clear how important our economy is to our national security.

Sounds like it is going to take mega-bucks to make this adjustment.

It was my understanding that the primary role of these subs was, and still is to give us nuclear

capabilities around the globe in a clandestine manner. Even though we have to adjust to our enemy's

improved detection capability, I would think it would still be fairly easy to hide subs on a planet that is mostly ocean

for quite some time.

While I understand that submarines also do things insert and extract special forces, and have non-nuclear cruise capabilities, the fact that these submarines with nukes are so difficult to target if we would ever edge toward the brink of a nuclear exchange, I would think they could still carry out their mission of

deterrence in a very effective manner.

It would be fascinating to hear the inner debate, and the desire to obtain the funding needed between the Flag Officers of differing opinions who are in charge of mapping our Navy's future capabilities.

Actually, the snorkel was not very effective and rarely used . If there was even a little chop on the surface, seawater would pour down the snorkel into the engine. Not good.

Well back in the days when the close range rockets and the ICBM's were the big new toys out there, they were talking of doing away with the subs, aircraft carriers and the B52's.

Heck, next was a space station to point rockets at other countries.

But when the party was over and the dust settled, they sobbered up, sat and thought it through like they should have before opening there mouths ... lo and behold ... there were newer, bigger and better subs, aircraft carriers and bombers (an more rockets).

They buckled in and never looked back .. until 2009s election.

Now that's Trump is in, and no thanks to nobama and the dems reign of terror leaving us about the size we were prior to WW1 ... here's our chance to step it up a notch or two kids ... can't wait to see whats next

There is also speculation that the F22 Raptor will be the last manned fighter fielded by the US. In 30-40 years when it will be retired drones will rule the sky.
