Since I started pulling the camper last year I have been wanting to up my truck game into the diesel market. Not that the 08 HEMI cant pull the camper, its that it cant pull it past a gas station. It will tow 8750 and the camper maxes out at 7K but it turned what should have been a 8-9 hour trip to Savannah Ga into about 13 and getting only 10 MPH at 65 MPH with the camper. I dont mind hooking up the load distribution hitch but easier would always be better. Then last year when I went on the elk hunt with a buddy, he tows the camper with his 2500 Cummings. Pulling my camper up hill at 70 he was getting 17 MPH with the windows rolled up and AC on. Not to mention hooking it up was as simple as dropping it on the hitch and attaching the tow bar with him having 2 times the towing and rear suspension to handle the tongue weight.

This would not be a daily driver and may likley be the last truck I will ever buy. Down the road it needs to be able to handle a decent 5th wheel as I am looking at retirement in about 10 years and want to spend time traveling with the wife, and kids/grandkids. The 08 quad cab has plenty of room for us getting around time and for short road trips but I like the additional room of the new crew cabs, especially for the folks and dog in the back seat. I really want something with more cab storage especially when traveling with extra folks in there so the Megacab is really appealing to me.

There are a lot of nice packages out there in the 25/3500 truck lines. Some of it I do want some of it not so much especially for the purpose of the truck, now and in the future. I dont see it being a daily driver anytime in the near future. The 08 still has lots of life left in it, is paid for and has a lifetime powertrain warantee. My plans are actually to let my daughter start driving it in about 3 years. yea it could use a little touch up paint from small scratches and the drivers seat has a tear on the seam where my ass drags across it getting in and out but other than that it is in pretty good shape for 9 years old with 160K miles.

I know I would not be happy with the entry level "Tradesman" package. I just want some more of the nice items that you cant find in that model. In this area however it seems to jump from there to the Laramie package with little available in the middle. Power seats, upgraded stereo, heated seats, dual AC zone and stuff like that is what I really want to upgrade to, not so much leather and extra money for chrome.

Well last night while helping a buddy look for a truck I stumble on this.

http://www.miraclech...471d8d8a620.htm

Not only does this dealership have what I want in the color I want they have another one in the charcoal/black that would work too. The Big Horn package is what my current truck has and this one has everything but the 5th wheel prep group that I want in a new one. And for about 8K less than a Laramie.

Here is the kicker, the wife and kid are down in ATL for the weekend but I have already been approved for financing and with the house selling it is something that will fit in the budget without a crow bar.

Is it worth a couple of weeks in the dog house for her to come home to a new truck in the driveway?

Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission? Better have something nice for her too.

Well, luckily I have a little sitting aside that will make some shine bling for her if the need be. I dont think roses would quite make up for a 50K truck.

Tell her you got a hell of a deal on it. Couldn't pass it up. I mean, she gets a whole new house but, you "needed" a heavier duty truck.

Honestly right now it would be a hell of a deal. In TN AD military doesn't pay sales tax on new cars/trucks, boats, even campers and RVs even if they are state residents. I happen to be on AD orders for counter drug support for the summer so that right there saves about 4K.

Ok, now a hard question. Why not call her and see what she thinks?

Cause she is asleep right now. I have to run to the dump and go get the oil changed in my truck. Then I may go up and take it for a test drive. I have never driven the mega cab or a long wheel base HD truck before. That should give her plenty of time to get awake and get some coffee in her. I would also have to work out getting my truck home if I were to buy it anyway.

If it fits in the budget comfortably and is a good deal I don't see why she'd be upset. However, we men never understand why they get upset. I'd talk to my wife before I bought something like that.

I think she might get upset because I would be getting a new truck and her Jeep is about 3 years older than the truck I have now.

That being said, mine has 2 times the miles but is also in better shape. Not all her fault, it was the primary kid hauler back and forth to school so there are a lot more splis and stains on the interior.

Right, she is timid to drive my quad cab 1500, a Megacab 2500 would have her petrified. Not to mention she would fail it up the first time with unleaded.

Well, my truck is a 2008 and her car is a 2012. First of the year, she's getting a new car.

I think she and I both invisioned her getting a new car first, but with the addition of the camper, we need the bigger truck.

Tag? Tag is free. I'll move the Air Medal tag off of her Jeep. After all, she didn't earn it.

In our area that saves a lot per year.

50k is a lot of money for a car. Even I would never do that without it being a mutual decision.

It's a lot of money for something that depreciates immediately. It's almost the cost of a second vacation home.

Test drive it first. That will tell you whether it's worth the dog house or not. Lol
