I can't afford a commercially made suppressor for my .223.  I'd like to shoot a lot more than I do, but I try to shoot only during the week when neighbors are at work.  Danged inconvenient requirement I've set for myself, but I'm living with it.  If'n I had a suppressor I could probably shoot more, but can't afford them.  I've seen every kind of kit imaginable for making one out of a Maglite case.  I know you still have to purchase the tax stamp.  (which I think is WAY stupid!!)  Any way, my question is are the Maglite suppressors as effective as commercially made suppressors?

I think they can be as quiet, I just don't think they're as durable.

There's a video online of a guy testing it out against a name brand manufactured one.

I wouldn't bother. I'd buy a tried and true design and call it god.

Well, Greg, you of all people know I don't have the bucks to buy a commercial unit.  Certainly not worth it for as little as I shoot.  That's why I was wondering about the Maglite suppressor.

If it works it works if it doesn't you're out $250.00 or so and an 8 month wait.

$200.00 plus what ever the maglite stuff is. I've never considered one so figured $50.00 would be about right however  five second GOOGLE shows me about $200.00 for all your needed materials.  Just not my path. I knwo several guys that build them and sell 'em so for me I wouldn't. For others they would be GTG.  As ling as it's legal to shoot where you are at, and I'm pretty sure it is, I'd go shoot whenever I felt like it. I did out there.

Yup, the Socialist Mayor and City Council hasn't banned my property....................yet.  Two miles closer to town is the "line" though.  I worry too much about my neighbor's privacy, Greg.  Just me!  Next door neighbor has Parkinson's Disease and gets upset easily.  No need to make matters worse than necessary.  Gotta keep da peace!

I want to make one. I even have a dead D-Cell Maglite that could be the donor. But then I also own a lathe and have experience making perfectly good metal stock into scrap... er, parts....

I've seen some interesting designs using D-Cell lights and freeze plugs as baffles.

Me too.............I've got an old "donor" Maglight that would work perfectly.  Don't know if the freeze plug baffles are the best way to go or not, but I think it would be an interesting project to try some day.

The setups I've seen online are WAY less than $200.

Perhaps we were looking at different components.
