I want to build a budget Zombie edition AR

Recommended Posts

I am looking to build a Zombie edition AR (zombie engravings and such) for a budget of around $800 or less. I want to go with 5.56/.223 I am looking to find out what i can build around that price range or less. what size barrel? i am thinking of a 1:7 twist... any help would be greatly appreciated! pics are also great because you must appease the pic porn gods! I know a lot of you will probably harp on me about the search feature but i cannot use it yet and am looking for some guidance. I have approximately 90 days untill i come home from Iraq, and want to have a good plan ready. Thanks, Gregg aka ZombieSoldier

First off Welcome to the Forum and Thank you for your service. You may want to spend some time reading on this and other forums as most of the things that work will be found easily.

Unless you are going to stick to higher weight bullets, a 1:9 will suffice. Most range ammo is 55gr and a 1:9 will work just fine. unless you are looking seriously at engaging at and beyond 200 meters, a 16" barrle will also be fine, no need to get a 20" or longer unless you want AT&T with this and in 5.56/.223 there are much better options in bolt actions for those ranges, seriously. Cosmetically with engraving and such there are "Zombie" specifics available, however, cosmetics are generally categorized in the "Bling" section and tend to add cost which it looks like you are tying to avoid.

Decide what you want to do with it as focusing on a purpose build will keep you focused. There are vendors of all price ranges and many are discussed on these forums. Picturs also abound in threads, vendors sites and everywhere else on the webz.

There is no magic bullet answer. The options are numerous and varied. Knowing what YOU want is a good first step. Knowing what you want to accomplish with it will be next and you can go on from there. Some forums have classifieds and you may be able to find a good used one in your price range but make sure you ask informed questions about anything you find that peaks your interest. Make sure you are satisfied with the answers you get so you don't end up buying a "brand name" item that is worn out or broken. Buyer beware and all.

Good Luck.

Welcome to the Armory! Thank you for your service!

Good inform from Growler, he is right that custom things cost a bit more. I personally would go with a 16" 1:8 barrel, this will allow you to shoot most ammunition out there.

Here are a few ideas from a great sponsor.

palmetto state armory has stripped lowers for 79 bucks plus 7 for shipping and the cost of your ffl transfer. might be military discounts all you have to do is ask then you need a lpk and upper reciever. they have the zombie engraved dust cover for 15 bucks. im pretty sure you can get the lower engraved also but not 100%. stag LPK is 66.00 then you need a buttstock so palmetto has them for 50 and that completes your lower at 217 but i would add 50 bucks for shipping and transfer so 267.00 that leaves you 533 for an upper reciever.

welcome and thanks for the service

In the Military, use the MWR or Outdoor Rec as your FFL. Generally $20-30 per transfer and no tax. Seriously.

Thanks for your service.

Look at Spike's Tactical; iirc there were some zombie lowers there. http://www.spikestactical.com/new/z/index.php

Zombie logo / selector markings are Live/Dead/Undead @$99

Maybe an upper kit from Del-ton or M&A Parts?

+1 for Palmetto State Armory, some good prices on kits.

From some of my notes (below):

For a custom or in stock engraving Tom Sawyer used to do excellent work but has gotten out of the business; however this fellow has his machinery:

Sawyer's lowers saying "Keep Texas zombie free" with a crossed out zombie on the magwell.

The kicker was the selector read "Alive" -- "Dead" -- "Undead"

I have a local engraver who does awesome work. We do AR receivers engraved with unit crests: http://www.fbmginc.com/index.php?page=shop...rt&Itemid=1

Stay safe, keep your head in the game.

eta: you might consider the Umbrella Corp. logo (red & white umbrella) and do your own color fill om the engravings.
