Recommend A 10mm To Buy.

Recommended Posts

I am going to purchase a 10mm handgun for EDC, I currently use a G-17, so size does not matter. I was looking at the Glock 20, 29 and 29SF but I was wondering if there were any suggestions for another brand that is as reliable as the Glock, for under $1000? I would also be looking for a round recommendation (off the shelf) to carry in it, and one for target practice. Any recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Glocks, are, of course, Glocks. Rock Island Armory has a 10mm 1911 for well under $1000. I like the Kimber 10mm.

Will the RIA MS handle any ammo I throw at it?

Sure, but you have to keep in mind that every gun always has it's favorite ammo.

My son carries a RIA 10, (a 5" 1911) everywhere he goes into Wyoming if bears are near, hunting, fishing or traveling. He really trusts this firearm, and has indicated to me that it has been totally flawless. We bought him a .45 Kimber for a College graduation gift and his RIA is with him far more often.

For ammo check-out Underwood Ammo https://www.underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto/. Also look at Georgia Arms http://www.georgia-arms.com/10-mm/. The 180-gr. ammo is good as an all-around carry round. Finally, the Double Tap has many options for 10mm: http://www.doubletapammo.net/index.php?route=product/category&path=303_301. For off-the-shelf, it depends on location as to brand availability. I have currently, carried SIG Elite Performance Ammo in both my 1911's, and Remington UMC 180's for target shooting. HPR is good ammo, usually available at Cabela's and Field and Stream off-the-shelf. http://www.hprammo.com/catalog/jhp/10mm-29/

I wanted more barrel and we open carry in Virginia. I normally carry a 5" 45acp but decided it wasn't enough for eventualities out on the place and i bought the longslide RIA 10mm (pro match) and it APPEARS to be everything I wanted. Unfortunately it was raining today and killed my plans to wring it out. :(

I WILL post a report once I get to the range.

I live in VA as well, near DC. I usually shoot at Elite in Manassas, just in case you are in that area.

Hehe--I live where the "range" is a berm pushed up on the back of the property :) BTW, look for a range report in a few minutes on the Pro Match.

I believe it. I ran into the same thing--West Virginia, not too far from Winchester, is the closest "stocking dealer" to Richmond.

I wanted to hold the high-capacity version of what I bought to see if I liked it or if it felt too fat. Anyway, I knew what a 1911 single-stack feels like so I went with that.

Our next gun show is the 27th-28th at the "Meadow Events" or whatever they call the state fair area at Doswell.
