Clean burning powders for AR

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I just ordered my first AR. It is a S&W M&P sport II in 5.56.

I have some ammo I got when a client gave me a truck load of reloading equipment (can you ever have too much?) and there was some .223 in it. 100 rds, so enough to get me sighted in and have some fun for a day.

While this is my first AR I have been reloading for over 30 years.

Some powders burn cleaner than others and , other than more to clean, it really isn't a big issue for me.

Since the S&W is a GI gun what powders are you all using that seem to be cleaner burning than others?

Thanks for the input.

Darrell

CFE 223. Very clean, great accuracy.

Vith N-140 and Varget. Clean, consistent and reliable. I use both and Vith-540 in my NRA National Match Service Rifle.

TAC, Varget, 8208XBR are the main ones I've used for .223

All seem to be pretty clean imo.

I've got a bunch more to test out, but with these performing as well as they have, I haven't had the need to branch out just yet. :thumb:

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have WIN 748 and Varget on hand so I will start with those and see if I can get a decent load worked up from either.
