Has anyone done their build with an 18" barrel? I'm having a bit of a time picking between a 16" and 20", and I thought perhaps 18" might be a happy medium. My plant is a rifle length free floating rail over it to extend my sight picture, as if that matters at the moment.

Anyhow, I was thinking 18", mid length gas system, heavy profile (but not bull barrel), 1:8 or 1:9, chrome lined chamber, unlined bore... only really care about M4 feed ramps insofar as it will affect what uppers I'll consider, e.g., if it doesn't have them, I don't want an upper which does, if it does have them, then I'll take either/or.

Anyone know who offers a barrel to those specs, by chance?

This is what you are seeking. I urge you to consider this and order it with the gas block and gas tube. You will not regret it one bit. These barrels are super accurate. I will attest to that. I would also recommend using the BCM A5 Intermediate Buffer System with it if you are planning on using a carbine stock. This combination is super smooth.

No need for urging... already ordered it. I knew this site would come through for me. Thanks for the reply!

Glad you figured out what your looking for. Many SPR's are built on an 18" barrel. I happen to like 20" barrels to eek out a few more fps but the advantage is almost nil.

When you finish the build, post some pics. We love gun porn.

I have ARs in 7.5", 12.5", 16",18", 20" and 24".

A lightweight 20" handles nicely while a 16" lightweight feels butt heavy.

I have a 6x45 in bull barrel in 18" and it is somewhat muzzle heavy.

IMHO, your selection of 18" medium heavy is just about right.

I thought 18 inch AR's taste best with an adjustable gas block, no ?

I was going to mention that I have an 18" barrel with a rifle length gas and it does not cycle. I will have to drill the hole bigger.

Mid length gas is proper for 18" with standard size holes.

I did not run an adjustable GB on my 18" LaRue Tactical Stealth barrel and it performed very well with absolutely very little recoil. I had it mated to a lower with the BCM A5 intermediate buffer system and running a LANTAC E-BCG.

I built a rifle for a customer using a tactical ammo ev5 mid length barrel adjustable gb and vg6 epsilon brake and was able to quickly do a sub half inch group with 77gr gold match at a 100 yrds with minimal effort.

I too have an 18" mid-length w/standard GB, and it's never hiccupped. It has a very pleasant shot cycle.

I think 18" is the new 20", so to speak. It seems nowadays, 20" barrels are used mainly on target rifles or retro builds.

Side note: an 18" barrel with mid-length gas will have a lot of dwell, which should allow it to cycle just about anything.

18" with rifle length gas can be problematic. I have a CMMG medium contour on one of mine. With the rifle length gas, I had to open the gas port a little. It runs great now and has for several years.

From all accounts, an 18" mid length runs fine. I have a 16" mid length Faxon that never stumbles.
