which ammo to buy .55 or .62

Recommended Posts

Hey Brain Trust,

PSA    has a deal on ammo Federal 55gn and 62gn same price. This is my first purchase and I'll be shooting it in a PSA 16 barrel 1 in 8 twist  (as soon as my lower comes in). Any one better than the other.

Personally, I would but the 55 grain.  I's get the 1000 round case, 10 Magpul mags, free shipping and $50 rebate.

The 69 grain are going to be steel core, and some ranges don't allow the steel core bullets due to risk of fire.

Edit: Just realized you said 62 grain, not 69 grain.  I'd still get the 1000 round case.

Don't think it really matters to be honest as long as the 62gr has a lead core.

Got a link?

I have a stock of both, so my comment is, whatever you have your rifle zeroed with unless you don't mind rezero.

Like these guys have said, your rifle is going to do both just fine.  Unless you are going to war, the hole size is going to be about the same and if you are looking for hunting, there's better choices now than either.  There is a cool factor to the steel core but honestly if you ever shot larger caliber armor piercing, it almost makes it a joke.

Summation, your question is as much a whichever tickles your fancy as you can get in the gun world.  FMJ, I typically go for whatever gives me the most rounds for my dollar.

it says steel core.

I can get Federal 55gn FMJ-BT 1000 rds and 10 30 rd PMAGs for $299 after rebate and I do need some mags.

If you need mags, that’s the deal right there.  If you didn’t need mags, you could get that, get the rebate, and sell the mags, now they’re down to about 22 cents a round.  That’s reloading prices right there.

Unless you specifically want steel core, just go with the lead core 55gr.

Chances are it'll also be more accurate for you.

Either of these would be a good buy. Buy more when you can.

At some point, I would recommend buying some 62 gr. (M855) ammo. A 420-round can will get you started.

It makes sense to have both types of ammo on hand.
