andy2205
Lately it seems that if I wake up early, I can't go back to sleep. It's been like this for about the past year, but has happened more often since the hurricane struck in October. I usually have an alarm set during the week for 5:30, but most days I don't make it there. Waking times have been all over the place, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00. I just can't get back to sleep and most often spend the extra time watching the news, cleaning up in the kitchen, or reading through the websites I normally visit. I don't feel bad during the day, but it doesn't help on the other end when I want to sleep early. Hardly ever sleep in on the weekends, it used to be the dogs would come and get me to let them out. Today's wake up time was 4:35, no reason, just popped up and can't sleep. Walked to the kitchen and put the water on to boil. Is this just another getting old thing? muddyduck
It’s somewhat normal as we get older, but a medical professional should chime in. As we get older usually our need for rest diminishes some is my understanding. Also check your cafeen intake too. As we age sensitivity changes. hlhneast
Lately I have been in so much pain I am waking up anywhere from midnight to 2am. My alarm is set for 4am during the week but it hasnt been needed in months. I do better at the hunting camp, no computer, no TV. I can generally sleep in. Too much noise here at the house with TV's going. I will make it thru my work day and get home and may catch a nap until supper time or may actually sleep until midnight or so. Woke up at 2:20 this morning and started coffee. Finally went out at 4:30 for a muffin and another cup. Went to WallyWorld looking for a waffle iron, 4 on display, none to buy. Sheesh. Picked up a couple more things. Stopped at Hardees for a real breakfast and back home by 6:30. Such is the life for an old man. A nap will occur about 10AM most likely. Thankfully its Saturday. alpo
I'm usually up every morning at 5am give or take. But then again I am up and down all night going to the bathroom to pee. Most times every couple hours or so. That's an old thing too. I use to hit the pillow and didn't get up till I got up in the morning but no more.
Snake46
4:35 is great..keep setting your alarm as the one time you need to get going early will be the time you sleep late..great to get old.
sw9mm
I am usually up by 5 am, sometimes earlier, rarely sleep until 6. I go to bed at 10 -11 pm Every night. Been that way for the better part of 40 years. Alpo, if you get up that often to pee, if you haven’t seen a urologist, go see one. That is a symptom of BPH. I have BPH. My sleep doctor told me it was old man syndrome.

j-dub
its not so much what time it is, but after about 6 hours of sleep I guess my body says ok, that was fun, lets get up and do something. I haven't slept in since I was a teenager, so I don't really remember it being anything extra special.

Over the winter I don't get tired enough to sleep until 2:00am or so, but then it's 6hrs tops and I'm up. In the summer it shifts back an hour or two, probably because I'm doing more to get tired when it's nice outside and I have more daylight to do things with. Until about 13yrs ago I wasn't able to sleep more than about 4hrs at a time, but that was before I started sleeping on air and my back couldn't take being in bed any longer. ETA: Daylight Savings Time is part of the equation too. Edited February 23, 2019 by Longhair
towtruck
As a youngster I survived on 5 hrs sleep during the week when I logged. I would always catch up on sleep on my day off. I have always needed 8 hrs a night. I just never got it back then. To this day, no matter what time I go to bed, I will wake up 8 hrs later. If I have to get up early I set an alarm and 99 out of 100 times I will wake up before the alarm goes off....I hate being woke up with an alarm so my body knows when to get up. Now, if I get up early and put in a long day it kills me the next day where it never did before.
MontanaLon
I have the opposite problem and have for years. I can't wake up early to save my life. I can literally sleep through a bomb going off and will only wake up when I am ready. I hate it but really can't do anything to change it. I've tried, I am just wired screwy. Gmountain
I usually go to bed around 12-12:30 and get up around 6. Often I wake up in the middle of the night worrying about work.
md65636
I'm in bed between 10 or 11 and up by 4 or 5. Like G, I'm always thinking about something.
Rampy
Sleep......what's sleep....... So many variable, can sleep when the sun is up, but not when it's down, worked nights for 20-30 years between the military & ambulance & such, so it's normal to sleep when the sun is up....daylight was hell, but would go to work at 3PM and get off 3Am....or 6PM to 6 AM....for a couple years worked 3 day shifts, 3 swing shifts and then 3 mids & had 3 days off....or when manning was low, 3 day shifts, 24 hours off, 3 mid shifts and 3 days off and do it again..... Now it's a combination of things......but when I sleep can sleep for 2-3 hours and up or sleep for 11 hours and only waking to pee and back to bed.... Course we have a sleep number bed and I love playing with it, can set it up sft, hard or whatever fits the body's needs and then get some sleep......
