sw9mm
Chuys in Austin and Houston for sure, not sure where else they are, lines can be long though. In Llano (central Tx ~ an hour west of Austin) there are (or were 3 good ) BBQ places, Lairds (was for sale) , Goodmans (?) and Innmans. climb Enchanted rock (or just look at it) 3 -400 ft tall granite rock! S of Llano (Between Llano and Fredricksburg. Lots of wineries in the area. In Fredricksburg (hour or so west of San Antonio) kind of a touristy town. Lots of German food. ADM Nimitz was born there and there is a museum about him. In Houston, Goode and Co BBQ. near 59/69 and Kirby (S of 59 a few blocks), Pappas BBQ, Berryhill (texmex near Sugar Land) Pappasitos Cantina (by the Astro Dome/NRG area and on 59/69 near Sugar land), .Rudy's, Spring Creek BBQ. Those are some of the places I am familiar with.

That's the great thing about being retired, you point the nose of the car and go, feel like turning, you turn......we are driving to San Antonio & The Crockett and then who knows, up to OKC and home possibly.........have no idea, just going as the wind blows..... Thus can go anywhere in the state we want Edited March 20, 2019 by Rampy
Steelborn1
La Margarita in Round Rock is really good. We go there a lot. Rudy’s is good BBQ. Salt Lick is also really good.

If you make it to the hill country when you leave SA (which you should), Coopersin Llano used to be fabulous for BBQ, TexMex is every other door in SA..also need to see the National Museum of the Pacific in Fredericksburg (on your way to Llano)..
capnjim01
Coopers in new Braunfels between San Antonio and Austin., much better than Rudy's, A little out of the way is Luling City Market BBQ in Luling of I-20. I'm originally from NC and we always had pork bbq, Texas beef is way better.
gshayd
Go with Franklins in Austin. Man knows what he is doing. The only downside is there is usually a line out the wazoo Rudy's moist Brisket Rudys is in a few places. I have ate at several Rudy's and the way they cook is consistent. Even at the one in Colorado. Moist Brisket for the win.

Been to the original Rudy's and Las Palapas in Leon Springs several times.
TomJefferson
Lived in TX for years, best BBQ and Mexican is, no kidding, what part of town are you in. Its everywhere. You can wait till you get hungry, pull into a gas station, and ask the minimum wage attendant where, and strike gold. Its really not as much where as it is what. Quite unique to the SW, especially TX, is there emphasis on beef BBQ which just isn't right unless you have a Jalepeno on the side. Other regional favs are the Mexican spicy corn, Mexican cornbread, and very TX their use of mashed potatoes with BBQ. Its all a throwback to the 19th century cattle days. Brisket is like a way of life. I use to have a thing, pull into nowhere TX, walk into a bar, if the bar had boiled eggs in a jar and tomales in another jar, I knew I was in a town that was old school so there had to be great BBQ, Mexican, and a good chance at a great cowboy steak. Made myself hungry just posting this.

I think they had been on the smoker a couple of hours at that point. MadeInUSA
Id say any place that has beans in their "chilli" will have good BBQ. Since they know how to cook. 1
