Ruger AR-556 Barrel nut

Recommended Posts

Looking at possibly replacing the factory 2-piece handguard on an AR-556 with a free-float handguard. I know that the Ruger isn't totally mil-spec, but I was wondering if the threads on the lower receiver are mil-spec. I know I can call Ruger and can probably purchase a free-float from them. I also know I'll need a low profile gas block Just looking for options.

The threads on the upper are mil spec. Any aftermarket handguard barrel nut will fit.

Order any aftermarket handguard you want. It will work.

Ditto. Have you thought about the gas block? Will your hand guard be short? If not, are you going to cut off the sight from the block or get a new lo-profile? Maybe get an adjustable gas block to fine tune. I wish I had done that.

Oops. Brain malfunction. Obviously I meant “upper” not lower. I figured the threads were mil-spec but I just wanted to hear from experience. The gas system on the gun is carbine length so anything over 9” will cover the gas block I’m thinking probably a 10” or 12”. I’ll probably replace the A2 sight with a low profile gas block. I’ll have to remove the upper hand guard ring anyway. Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it.

Welcome Jimi.  My suggestion as always is to leave your rifle intact and shoot the piss out of it in the form its in now.  After running a few thousand rounds thru it and talking with shooters at the range and here at the forum will give you an idea on what you personally like and what you dont.  Parts now are fairly cheap so building what you want from the ground up isnt expensive really.  You can build a nice rifle for $400-500.  Even cheaper is to build a new upper as long as the Ruger lower is compatible which I do not know.  Modification of your Ruger can be done but as soon as you start fiddling with it your warranty goes out the window.  Building a new upper or a whole rifle avoids this and having another rifle is never a bad thing.  "One is none and two is one" is the saying.

Did the same thing to mine. Left the A2 sight/gas block but installed a 9" free float quad rail. The gun always shot great but I hated the 2 piece hand guard. I love the way it looks now...
