Rampy
Whataburger was blah, no ketchup on the burger, meat was bland & nothing special, had to ask for cheese and at least it was melted, best part was the onion rings
TomJefferson
I lived in Houston. Whattaburger's big deal is they use to stay open all night. It beat going hungry or having to eat Crack in a Box. Funny but true. Their burgers are on par with Sonic which isn't saying much. ironically staying open all night was In and Out's big deal except the burgers are better. specops56
We've had one Whataburger for decades on the opposite side of town from me. My family went once to try it when I was in my early teens. None of us liked it and never went back The only thing we liked was their milkshakes.. I have no idea if they are still there. Never had an In & Out. I never liked onions until I tried the onion rings at Jack In The Box in Norfolk back in the late 70s. Terry

My old buddy Greg, may he RIP, had a Turkey burger recipe that was almost good enough to swear off beef. A real flavor bomb.
Lylelovett666
The hype around in & out,is way overblown. Good, but nothing glorious. I think sonic makes a better burger. If you ever find yourself in Seattle,Try a Dicks burger. Very good. Better yet,if you wind up in Tacoma wa to your sad misfortune, stop by the Frisco Freeze. Best burgers on the face of the earth, amazing fries & tartar sauce that will make you weep for joy. Little drive up place that’s been there for over 70 years. Fricken amazing. hkriflenut
Whataburger is the best fast food burger around our little town. I've grown to favor them over the other options - Sonic, McD's, Burger King - what I miss tho is Carl's Jr / Hardee's. I guess the year before we moved here, Carl's Jr. opened a store in Tomball. 4 months later it was closed, never to reopen. The building still sits empty, just as CJ's left it. I finally tried something other than a steak at Texas Roadhouse yesterday - I ordered a double bacon cheese burger and damn was it good. The meat was seasoned really well, burger was cooked perfectly medium (they ask how you like it, and actually cook it that way) and the thing was so damn juicy that the bottom bun fell apart before I got half way thru the burger. I get mine dry - I don't care for mustard or mayo at all, don't eat it - and don't really like ketchup on a burger anymore either. Occasionally I'll do A1 on a burger. I like a burger with good veggies, good cheese, and not cooked until it's a dry puck of "meat" We have a Ron's Hamburgers in town - small chain out of Oklahoma I guess - their chili cheese fries are good, but the burgers are too damn greasy and the buns taste funny. The best hamburger I've had since moving to Texas is from a little cafe in a small town about 30 minutes from our place, called the White Hall Cafe. They make good pulled pork, good burgers too. Not sure about the brisket yet, as we've only ate there a couple times, and they were out of brisket both times we went (I think that is an indicator its good) I'd like to put a Whataburger and a Carl's Jr head to head and see which one is better. hkriflenut
Weird. In Oregon CJ's was my go-to fast food burger. Flame broiled, seasoned beef. Fresh vegetables. Buns typically fresher than McD or Bk's. Their fries are about the best chain restuarant fries, next to Five Guys, though I tend to lump Five Guys in with sit down eateries, not fast food, due to the lack of drive thru, and the fact that it takes a little while (usually) to get your food at Five Guys. Carl's also for a long time had "The Green Burrito" in a lot of their stores, and their California Burrito or Burrito Especial - if you got none of that nasty guac or sour cream - was damn good. A Chipotle size burrito, grilled shut, with decent ingredients for a fast food burrito. A Steak Burrito Especial with a side of fries was a favorite meal for me. Carl's also used to do chili cheese fries - proper beanless chili topped with shredded cheddar-jack cheese blend served over a large order of fries. That, plus the entire Green Burrito menu were purged without warning from their menu. Most Whataburger establishments I've tried have been good - there's been a couple though where the burgers were too greasy, or cold, or the kitchen monkies can't read "no mustard" or "dry" - mustard is the only condiment that comes on most Whataburger burgers by default, you have to ask for substitutions or additions. I've yet to try the In and Out. One opened in Katy not long after we arrived to the Houston area from Oregon. Took a year for a damn lines to *not* be spilling onto the roadway whenever we'd pass by. Still never felt the burning urge to stop in. The Whataburger in our town opened the same week we moved here - damned lines for that were also blocks long. They stay consistently busy too, pretty much year round. The Texas Ren Fest is going on right now - so weekend nights, especially after 9PM - are stupid if you want to eat there. Drive thru will be 50 cars deep, all the parking taken up and the dining room packed. Funny enough - the BK next door is never busy, Sonic also next door is usually as busy as Whataburger. McD's driveway situation is trash, its really only easily accessed from one direction of the main roadway it sits on, and their food is just above BK in my opinion. There's a foo-foo burger joint that opened up a block west of the Whataburger - but they don't have a single damned regular cheeseburger on the menu. Everything has a...flair - they're all damned oddball things like a peanutbutter and banana burger, the peanutbutter and jelly burger, etc. The closest thing to a regular cheeseburger is the grilled cheese burger - they use two grilled cheese sammiches as the bun. I've had a burger like that before in Oregon - a food cart in downtown Portland does what they call the "Cheesus" - a double bacon cheese that has two grilled cheeses for the bun. Yes, my fat-gurl self ate one. I was still hungry after leaving Little Big Burger. THAT place has amazing fries, but the burgers are smaller than White Castle Sliders, yet cost what a quarter pounder with cheese does. Not impressed with the burger. Their fries are treated with truffle oil and sea salt. I don't usually get fast food onion rings, because they all tend to suck. Got spoiled by a place in Portland called Roake's - I know @Pepperknows of them, and I'm sure he's eaten there. Their beer battered onion rings were the best I've ever had. Burgers are pretty good too.

Stopped at the dicks on 99 in Burien, Wa. Not impressed, thin patty very well done, pretty dry. Best burger I've ever had was a 1/2 pound buffalo burger at the truckstop at exit 61 on I 94 in Minnesota. Not sure if buffalo was better than domestic beef, but it was thick and red, about medium rare.
TomJefferson
Yep, a lot of the burger chains are regional and many that aren't, use to be. For example, Wendy's is a Kentucky chain originally and the founder "Dave" was quite the celebrity in KY till his passing. "Five Guys" started in Virginia and spread northeast before they did west. They're like an expensive version of "In and Out" in that they pride themselves on everything is fresh. Chicago and Midwest they have, of course, White Castle and the SE has Krystal which is a White Castle without all the grease. "Carls" is "Hardies" in the east. Still the best burgers are almost always some local place. My county its the "50's Diner" which has a menu of about 100 specialty burgers all the way up to their monster 3lb eat it challenge. They have the old school shakes to kill for. Of course, the motif is 50's 60's with old plagues and guitars on the walls with TVs playing old cartoon TV series trailers in loop from the 60s. Like the diners back east, they have a hell of a menu of food. I love the spiral cut potatoes. Best part is they're not killer expensive and unlike a lot of diners, the foods actually good. Having traveled the world for business, I identify with Jimmy Buffett's "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Though I can eat about anything, given enough time you crave a cheeseburger. Unfortunately, the same chains we're talking about aren't the same world wide. One of the most disappointing food experiences in my life was after being in China a week of eating "Mystery meat" I happened upon a Burger King in the Shanghai airport. Hell yes, a cheeseburger. I couldn't eat the damn thing. It tasted like crap. They had China-ed it. Hands down the most popular US chain in China is KFC. They're everywhere. Each one has two counters, one for the China version and one the US version with the US version always a very long line but even that is different. Its the smallest pieces of chicken you'll ever see. Like almost everything in China, they slaughter the animals while they are young to keep up with demand. Domino's Pizza in Poland, it looks like Pizza but it isn't. England, well let's just say I don't know if they know what good food is. I could write a book on it.

Way back in the Jurassic period, I took my first date downtown to a movie. Right next door to the theater there was a hole in the wall, mom and pop diner. Best cheeseburgers and chocolate shakes I've ever had! Terry
