National Gun Violence Prevention Organizations Call for Effective Federal Assault Weapons Ban in Wake of Alabama Rampage Shooting Leaving 11 Dead, Including Shooter

WASHINGTON, March 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following yesterday's assault weapon rampage shooting in Alabama leaving 11 dead including the shooter, America's leading national gun violence prevention organizations -- Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Freedom States Alliance, Legal Community Against Violence, and Violence Policy Center -- issued the following joint statement:

"Our sympathies go to all those affected by this terrible tragedy.

"The guns used in yesterday's rampage shooting across Alabama -- a Bushmaster AR-15-style assault rifle and an SKS assault rifle -- are military-bred firearms developed for the specific purpose of killing human beings quickly and efficiently. Yesterday's shooting is only the latest addition to a string of preventable tragedies committed with these military-style weapons. America needs an effective federal assault weapons ban to stop the mass production and marketing by the gun industry of these anti-personnel weapons. Today we call on the U.S. Congress to pass a federal assault weapons ban modeled on California's effective law that would ban these weapons once and for all.

"The answer to gun violence is not more guns. Alabama has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the nation -- more than 57 percent of the state's households have guns -- and some of the weakest gun laws in the country. At the same time, its overall gun death rate for 2005 (16.18 per 100,000) ranks it fifth in the nation. The sad truth is that America will continue to experience these horrific events until Congress listens to the friends and families of the 30,000 Americans who die from guns each year instead of the National Rifle Association."

30,000 Americans who die from Criminals each year

They're not mentioning that they include suicides, good shoots by citizens and good shoots by LE in those statistics. The actual death by criminal where a gun was used as the instrument is about 25% of that.

CDC mortality stats from 2004(most recent year surveyed) puts it at 29,569.

What they dont tell you is that they include suicides, legal self defense shoots and accidental deaths in the stats.

Suicides account for more than half. 2004 suicides by firearm - 16,750.

This leaves 12,819 NON suicides.

Legal shoots account for only 311 (CDC only counts legal shoots by law enforcement in this category).

Unintentional shoots only account for 649.

Homicides account for the remaining 11,624

**CDC "Homicide" category includes legal self defense shootings by citizens

Yah, Yes, but the loons were just gleefully waiting for such a tragic event to occur. I wonder if their acclamations and petitions would be quite the same if the same hate filled had employed a handgun, as the Korean nut at VA Tech, or perhaps a knife or sword. The loons’ article also happened to exclude the fact that most of the gun violence is carried by young black or Hispanic males with criminal records and handguns and not mentally ill white males without criminal records and carrying semi-automatic rifles. Such minor statistics somehow became over looked or were mistakenly forgotten.

Less then 24 hours after the shooting they are claiming it was a Bushmaster and an SKS and the police chief said it was an AK? I think we can stop and round file these idiots right here.

From a Post by Vid Video link ; Congress as well as the current puppet needs to tread lightly !!!.

Civil War is coming whether you like the idea or not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Remember powerful words by Thomas Jefferson !.

A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government

, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference.

Thomas Jefferson

A coward is much more exposed to quarrels than a man of spirit.

Thomas Jefferson

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

Thomas Jefferson

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.

Thomas Jefferson

Each of you needs to VIEW as well as UNDERSTAND the following message .

My Heart goes out too the Family's of this senseless act of violence . Punishing the masses for the errors of

the few , is exactly what has led too this kind of crap happening !. If citizens were Armed then perhaps

cowards such as this Idiot wouldn't of been so willing !.

The anti-gunners know they have lots on their side in office as President and in Congress. So of course they'll cry for this.

Let them cry.

Thuck fem. If they haven't done it yet, it will be a while... IMO. The bailout, stimulus and omnibus had everyone's attention and they could have passed it before anyone knew about it. However, I'm not going to get complacent by any means...

excellent post. I was actually going to post something similar.

I think that it is always a bit underhanded when these anti gun groups get together and post these statistics. This is one of the great cons of the anti gunners. Always state that 30k people died, but fail to mention that 17k of them are suicide. Sort of like the other great myth perpetrated by Brady and the others... Oh, 8 children are killed with a firearm every single day. * leave out the fact that a "child" according to the study is anyone under the age of 24. * Leave out the fact that the largest group of "children" killed are between the age of 13-17 and it is due to gang violence.

You know, why report the whole story when only half the story makes for a better argument.

Anyhow, I like your member picture. I've seen that painting probably thousands of times. My dad got that painting when I was a child and it hangs in my parents home to this day...
